In-depth Reviews

1. Arlo Video Doorbell

We believe that the original Arlo video doorbell is the best one currently on the market. It's a no-brainer if you already own other Arlo devices; if not, it should still be at the top of your list of priorities.

It shows incredibly detailed videos and is slim and fashionable. The 180-degree field of vision and 1:1 aspect ratio of the camera allow you to see the whole length of the person knocking on your door, including any packages that may be lying on the ground by their feet.

It’s a mains-powered device, so we’d suggest that it should be installed by professionals. However, There’s an available battery-powered version named Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wire-Free.

It is just one of a select few doorbell cameras that work with HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Alexa. However, to get the most out of the doorbell, including features like going back and checking who was at the door if you missed the call and allowing callers to leave a note for you, you'll need to sign up for the Arlo Secure subscription.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Resolution: 1536 x 1536

  • Audio: two-way

  • Power: Mains

  • Footage recording: unlimited video for a 30-day subscription

PROS:

  • Decent video quality

  • Stylish and compact design

  • Google Assistant, Alexa, and HomeKit integration

CONS:

  • No need for subscription with limited features

  • Mains-powered only

2. Ring Video Doorbell Wired

The Ring Video Doorbell Wired is the most reasonably priced model available from the company and provides good value. It records crystal-clear Full HD video and audio like other Ring smart doorbells but has a slightly smaller 155-degree field of vision.

In spite of this, we noticed that you didn't lose much from the image due to the tiny difference, making it a more than reasonable compromise to keep such a low price.

The doorbell camera's Full HD color footage appeared sharp and crisp, and even though the video that was captured after dark was in black and white instead of color, it was still easily visible.

There's no option as to make simple installation and to use this security doorbell on battery power.  Any existing chimes you currently have in your house will be stopped. Unfortunately, this means that they won't ring when the doorbell is pressed; instead, you'll need to buy the Ring Chime or Ring Chime Pro or connect your doorbell to an Amazon Echo Smart speaker, if you have one, to get an auditory indication when someone is at the door.

If you missed the initial alert, you would need to sign up for Ring Protect in order to see who was at the door. However, it also has other smart functions, such as the ability to create zones so that you only receive alerts about activity in certain locations.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Resolution: 1920 × 1080

  • Audio: two-way

  • Power: Mains

  • Footage recording: unlimited video for a 30-day subscription

PROS:

  • Outstanding value for money

  • Records clear audio and video

  • Suitable with Amazon Echo smart speakers

CONS:

  • Existing wired doorbell is required

  • No subscription needed with limited features

  • No HomeKit and Google integration

3. Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2

Ring's nearly top-of-the-line video doorbell is a close second to its Arlo rival, offering footage that is just as thorough and in a 1:1 aspect ratio so you can see the entire length of anyone at your doorstep and any packages they may be carrying. However, at 150 degrees, it has a slightly smaller field of view than what Arlo's rival doorbell offers.

With colored night vision, it surpasses its competitor. The camera simulates a color by adding it to portions of its range of vision that are in ambient light, such as the sky, for instance. Of course, it doesn't provide a full-color image, but throughout our experience with the product, we undeniably discovered that it improved the legibility of nighttime footage.

To really exploit the Ring Doorbell Video Pro 2, you’ll have to make a subscription to the Ring Protect service, whose features involve the ability to view who was at the door if you missed the alert.

Complete integration with Amazon Alexa allows you to use an Echo speaker to announce a doorbell press and talk with the visitor at your doorstep, instead of using your smartphone. If you’re in the US, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 even allows Alexa to respond to the door for you, and as part of its greetings feature, take a message on behalf of you. Nevertheless, it won’t work with Homekit or Google Assistant, which is opposite to the aforementioned Arlo Video Doorbell above.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 isn’t cheap at all and if your budget is tight, you can consider its previous model, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro, which is still offered at some outlets. Despite not having an equally high resolution or a 1:1 aspect ratio, it’s still an outstanding wired doorbell.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Resolution: 1536 x 1536

  • Audio: two-way

  • Power: Mains

  • Footage recording: unlimited video for a 30-day subscription

PROS:

  • Decent audio and video quality

  • Multi-color night vision

  • Alexa integration

CONS:

  • Subscription is not required with limited features

  • No Homekit and Google integration

4. Eufy Video Doorbell Dual

This video doorbell is perfect for anyone who receives several deliveries because it has not just one but two cameras, one of which faces the ground. The second camera not only captures any packages that might be at the feet of visitors at your door, but it also has useful features like pre-recorded messages that can be blasted when someone approaches the package, which helps prevent would-be opportunist burglars.

The Video Doorbell Dual is battery-powered, making it perfect for renters or DIY beginners, just like the Eufy Video Doorbell 2K (Wireless), which is listed lower on this list. To make the most of it, there is no subscription needed because it comes with a base station that provides 16GB of local storage for films captured by the doorbell.

However, it's heavier than many doorbells on this list, and the battery can’t be changed, unlike on the Ring Video Doorbell 4 which will be mentioned below, so the doorbell will not function when it needs to be recharged. Additionally, while it has Alexa and Google Support, Apple fans will be disappointed to find out that the support for HomeKit is non-existing. However, this is still a valuable doorbell if you receive frequent deliveries, especially when you’re not home.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Resolution: 2560 ×1920

  • Audio: two-way

  • Power: Battery

  • Footage recording: 16GB of free local storage with base station

PROS:

  • A widened view is provided by two cameras

  • No subscription is needed

  • Battery-run

CONS:

  • Heavier than most video doorbells

  • Doorbell does not function when unit needs recharging

  • Lacks HomeKit support

5. Nest Hello

The Arlo Video Doorbell and the Nest Hello both have circular, black-and-white designs. The difference is that it will not only allow you to see who is at your door, but it will also make an effort to recognize them through facial recognition.

The Familiar Face feature photographs everyone that knocks on your door, allowing you to assign names to people you know in the app. So, the app will provide a notification identifying them the next time they knock on your door. The library of images grows as a result of repeated visits, making facial recognition increasingly accurate over time.

The Nest Hello, a mains-powered smart doorbell, records video at the lowest resolution of all the doorbells we've evaluated thus far. We nevertheless believed that the image was explicitly clear to discern who was at the door. We were also awed by how simple the software was to use.

Similar to the majority of doorbell cameras, a subscription is required to receive anything beyond the essentials. For instance, unless you have Nest Aware, Nest Hello will only save video recordings of persons and motion that have been identified during the last three hours. Additionally, the doorbell lacks Alexa or HomeKit integration but, as expected, works with Google Assistant.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Resolution: 1600 x 1200

  • Audio: HD two-way

  • Power:  Mains

  • Footage recording: Unlimited video for a 60-day subscription

PROS:

  • Clear video

  • Helpful face recognition

  • App is easy to use

CONS:

  • Subscription isn’t required with limited features

  • Limited Alexa integration and lacks HomeKit support.

When researching different products to select the best security doorbell, we check the captured footage’s quality both during daylight and night time. We also evaluate the quality of sound of the video, as well as when talking with another person at the doorstep.

Smart Wireless Remote Video Doorbell Camera, 1080P Intelligent Visual Doorbell with Free Cloud Storage,Two-Way Calls, Night Vision, IP65 Weatherproof for Home Security

Additionally, we evaluate the ease of installation, battery life, and usability of the app, as well as any subscription services that may be available.
