Lithium polymer (LiPo) packs dominate performance RC driving for good reason. They deliver more energy per gram than nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells, hold voltage more consistently through a discharge cycle, and charge faster.

A LiPo pack rated at 50C or higher can sustain the burst currents that brushless motors demand without sagging mid-run. If you are running any kind of speed-focused or bashing build, LiPo is the practical default in 2026.

NiMH packs still make sense in a few situations. They are more forgiving of storage abuse, do not require a dedicated balance charger, and are genuinely safer for beginners who may forget to monitor charge levels.

The Tenergy 7.2V and Traxxas 3300mAh NiMH options on our list show that modern NiMH packs can still deliver respectable runtimes for casual drivers.

If you share your RC car with younger family members who are not ready for LiPo discipline, a quality NiMH pack remains a practical choice.

Cell count sets the nominal voltage, and voltage sets how fast your motor spins. A 2S LiPo runs at 7.4V nominal and 8.4V fully charged.

A 3S pack runs at 11.1V nominal and 12.6V fully charged, which translates to roughly 50 percent more RPM on the same brushless motor setup.

That jump in RPM also means more stress on your ESC, motor bearings, and drivetrain, so always check your ESC’s maximum voltage rating before stepping up to 3S.

Most 1/10 and 1/12 scale RTR vehicles ship with a 2S setup because it balances speed and reliability for a wide range of drivers. Experienced bashers and racers who want wheelie-popping acceleration typically move to 3S.
