In-depth Reviews

1. Creative Pebble V2 - Best Low-Cost USB-C Speakers for a PC

The Pebble speakers from Creative have been known for quite some time and in their V2 version, they are designed with a USB-C plug (including a USB-A adapter) which gives power to the speakers. They cost around $25 while the previous V1 costs a little less for $20. It’s worth it, though, because they play slightly louder and have better sound than the V1 version.

Although they don’t typically produce loud sound and the bass is light, they perform decently considering their modest price. There’s also a subwoofer version with clearer and louder bass available for about $48 for those who are interested.

2. Logitech Z407 - Best Wireless PC Speakers for Slightly over $100

Although the Logitech Z407’s compact size together with its all-plastic material makes it feel like a normal pair of speakers, it offers some great features and stunning looks that make it a PC accessory that you shouldn’t miss. Firstly, setting it up is quite simple. It can be used either by wiring with an auxiliary cable that’s 3.5mm long or connecting to a computer via USB. However, most people will choose Bluetooth to connect their devices.

It includes a controller with the size of a hockey puck that serves as a Bluetooth transceiver between any audio device enabled by Bluetooth and the speaker system and is powered by two AAA batteries. By touching on the puck's top and adjusting the volume dial, you may skip tracks forward and backward. It's also important to note that you can stand the speakers upright either horizontally or vertically. It has a clever design.

For the given price, the sound is only good when listening closely and the bass The sound is good at close range but the bass isn't precisely tight (you can only expect so much for the price). In small rooms, these PC speakers would work perfectly as an audio system but wouldn’t have the capacity to function well in larger rooms. Even though it is advertised as having an 80W power, power ratings don’t really mean so much.

3. Audioengine A1 - Best Speakers for a PC under $200

The A1 speakers, the newest member of the Audioengine family, have good and clear sound for their small size. Similar to the more pricey A2 Plus version which will be mentioned below,  they lack a little bass,  but if you listen to them closely (which would happen more often since most of the time you'd be sitting in front of a computer screen), the bass will appear to be acceptable. They can be connected to a subwoofer, although doing so would significantly increase the cost of the kit. They may serve as your primary speaker system in small rooms, but they simply lack the power for a large room.

A highlight of these speakers is that they look quite attractive. They are also quite easy to set up. The nice thing about them is that they're nice looking. They're also simple to set up and wireless, so you can connect it to your computer or other devices via Bluetooth. To activate pairing mode, simply press the pair button on the rear. The two speakers are connected by a set of speaker wires (the speaker on the left has the amplifier and all the options for connectivity). Additionally, you can use the provided cable to connect your computer to the auxiliary-in port.

4. Audioengine A2 Plus - Best Sound under $300

If you are incapable of buying the expensive Audioengine A5 Plus version which costs about $500 and also dislike its relatively big footprint, then the A2 Plus version is a good candidate to consider. However, it doesn’t sound as loud or high sounding and is less bassy. Nevertheless, it has a beautiful piano finish that gives a high-end appearance to it, and it has really remarkable sound quality for a little bookshelf-size speaker.

The Audioengine A2 Plus can be connected via Bluetooth and provides support for AptX Streaming or any devices that are compatible with AptX. Its audio cable has a standard length of 3.5mm which can be plugged into a headphone jack or auxiliary output.

For the price of $269, it produces brilliant sound in a small and stylish design that follows minimalism. That is the reason why it seems to become increasingly popular currently.

  • Special Feature:  For Smartphones, Computers, Music Players, and Tablets.

  • Connectivity Technology: USB Audio, Bluetooth aptX, RCA, 3.5mm mini-jack

  • Speaker Type: Subwoofer

5. Audioengine A5 Plus Wireless - Best Speakers for a PC under $600

The A5 plus wireless speakers from Audioengine have been in circulation for many years now and have gained some technology improvement over time. The version with only wire connectivity costs $399 but if you want an additional Bluetooth option, you need to spend an extra $100 for it. It can be connected to a PC either  via Bluetooth or with a cable, but it is nice to have Bluetooth if You can connect to your PC either with a cable or via Bluetooth, but if you want these speakers to function as typical bookshelf speakers, adding Bluetooth is excellent.

As is expected, these speakers are significantly more bassy than their smaller A2 plus version and they look similar to traditional monitor speakers. With a 150W amp already built in, they produce loud and clear music that will easily rock a medium-sized room.

Best Speakers for a PC FAQs

These are the most frequently asked questions when it comes to the best speakers for a PC.

1. Is a 2.1, 5.1, or 7.1 setup necessary?

For the PC market, 2.1 installations are typically limited to simply the left/right channels plus a subwoofer; more frequently than that, a 2.0 setup may even be without a subwoofer. The main reason for this is that it functions as a desktop and monitor with good stereo sound coming from speakers lying in front of the user.

Home theater systems and living room speaker sets will take that a step further by typically providing at least five surrounding speakers. While you could connect such a system to your PC and get great support for it, the number of wires involved around a single desk  makes us hesitant to endorse such a setup.  It is not worth considering.

To compensate for the lack of real speakers, some retailers may promote virtual 5.1, frequently at the price of sound quality, such as Windows' Sonic feature. Remember that a lot of games use advanced 3D audio techniques to precisely generate positional game sounds, so you might find that you don't need much assistance.

Creative Pebble 2.0 USB-Powered Desktop Speakers with Far-Field Drivers and Passive Radiators for Pcs and Laptops (Black)

2. How are PC speakers tested?

Through a variety of games with abundant soundtracks and sounds, including Call of Duty: Warzone, Doom Eternal, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Overwatch, we tested each set of speakers while gaming for many hours. Following that, we conducted listening tests using songs from albums in the lossless FLAC format, including Psychic from Darkside and Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, as well as clips from the movie Jurassic World.

The left/right balance was one of the most crucial characteristics to examine when considering gaming. We relied on the CS: GO Audio Test Chamber workshop project by geri43 to test this in-game. It's a straightforward tool that enables you to duplicate a variety of in-game audio, such as footfall, gunfire, footsteps, ladder movements, and more. We may move the sounds across the map or hide behind a wall to see how well we could match the speakers' direction with the sounds.
